About EHS-Alaska, Inc.

EHS-Alaska, Inc. was formed in 1986, and has been an employee owned company since 2003.  We currently have 5 people, and are known throughout Alaska, as the premier hazardous materials and industrial hygiene consulting firm.  EHS-Alaska specializes in hazardous building materials and has generally avoided consulting on contaminated soils, at least partially because we don’t want to compete with some of our clients.

Facts about Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, at about 285,000 population contains about 40% of the population of the entire state.  While small by Lower 48 standards, we have the amenities of a much larger city.  As the self proclaimed “Air Crossroads of the World”, Anchorage was the 4th largest in the world in Cargo Volume, and hosts many US and International airlines.  We get major artists on tour, Broadway Shows, the Anchorage Symphony is in it’s 78th Season, Anchorage Opera puts on many wonderful shows, along with many community shows.

Yes, we have short days in the winter, but we also have much longer days in the summer.  Two factors cause the difference:  The sun rises and sets at a very low angle to the horizon, which means due to “Civil Twilight” during the shortest days in the winter, we actually have 7.5 hours of useable “daylight” (not required to use car headlights), but only 5.5 hours between sunrise and sunset.  Between Mid April, and Mid August, it never gets dark enough to actually see stars in the middle of the night.  City lights reflecting off the snow, means that it is often bright enough to ski, bike or walk during winter nights without using headlamps, or using the dozens of miles of lighted multi-use trails.

Anchorage is a Winter City, but temperatures are moderated by being right next to Cook Inlet, so high & low temperatures are often warmer than they might be in the northern states in the Lower 48.  Personally, I have 4 apple trees, 3 cherry trees, 2 pears and 1 plum tree, along with “Arctic Kiwi”.  The pears and plum trees are not exactly ripening consistently now, but with Climate Change happening faster in Alaska than in the Lower 48, that is likely to change by the time they are mature trees!  Huge Alaskan vegetables are legendary, and greenhouses can grow tomatoes and corn.

Winter sanity is best maintained by taking advantage of many opportunities to get outside!  Anchorage has over 120 miles of professionally groomed Nordic ski trails.  1 major downhill ski area, and 2 smaller local ski areas, all within 1 to 1.5 hours from Downtown, and endless opportunities for back-country skiing.

Because of our short construction season, at EHS-Alaska, we take pride in our record of minimal change orders, or other construction stopping issues.  We focus on doing the job right.  We are proud to work with most of the architects and engineers in the state, and being a valuable, contributing member of their team, keeps them coming back to us.
